And So It Begins, Four Key Points From Arsenal’s Win Over Newcastle
Arsenal got their season up and running with a 1-0 win at Newcastle on Sunday. Here are my four key thought from the match:
NEW SEASON, SAME OLD AUBAMEYANG
Normal service resumes. If there was any doubt about his goal scoring instinct, the stats definitely have other ideas.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has now scored 33 goals in just 50 Premier League appearances for Arsenal, more than any other player in the club’s history.
On a wet Sunday afternoon in Tyneside, when it was looking like Arsenal will get just a point from Newcastle. Step up, Aubameyang, who received a well lofted pass from Niles, a glorious first touch was met with a composed finish. One nil to the Arsenal and that was it.
Aubameyang goal scoring prowess will be a vital tool to Arsenal this season in their quest of making the top four.
Yo Pierre deservedly won the man of the match and you can easily say that, Aubameyang has picked up from his golden boot achievement last season and off to a stunner.
The time was 1pm, I checked Twitter to see Arsenal tweet on the starting XI. Behold a bit decent team but the substitute bench gave me goosebumps (Pepe, Ceballos, Luiz, Martinelli, Torreira, Lacazette and Martinez).
I really can’t recall the last time we had such depth in the team. A quick reminder that Ozil, Bellerin, Kolasinac, Holding, Mustafi and Tierney were not in the match day squad too.
When the going gets tough, we would all appreciate the kind of team we’re building.
For obvious reasons, the depth Unai Emery have at his disposal should spur him on to delivering a good season for the Arsenal faithful, that, which at minimal is the top four.
It remains to be seen if this would finally be the season in which Calum Chambers would lay stake claim in the heart of Arsenal’s defence.
So much has been said about who partners David Luiz in the defence, Sokratis or Chambers or the returning Holding. You might want to say it’s only early days but the sign shown by Chambers in pre season and at Newcastle are encouraging to say the least.
His composure and ability to read the game reminds you of Holding, FA Cup final vs Diego Costa.
If Chambers continues his steady rise, he’d for sure give Emery a selection headache whilst also ensuring he keeps his spot at Arsenal.
3PTS ALL THAT MATTERED + CLEAN SHEET
The stats reads: Arsenal have now kept two away PL clean sheets in the same calendar year for the first time since 2017 (0-1 vs. Watford & 0-1 vs. Newcastle).
Dreadful right??… Yes, it shows how poor the team is on keeping a clean sheet. Talk of a confidence boaster, the away clean sheet recorded today would go a long way in shaping the mentality of the boys as they prepare for a marathon season.
That said, the lads might not have delivered the usual Emery ball we all expected but looking back at how we lost our opening match last season, three point was all we needed today as the swashbuckling football didn’t come through.
Back on Saturday when we play at the Emirates for the first time this season against Burnley in a lunch time kick off.
