Arsenal’s 11-game winning streak came to an end as they’re held to a 2-2 draw by Crystal Palace, courtesy of two penalties from Luka Milivojevic.
Here are my four takes from a frustrating afternoon at Selhurst Park.
– Tactically Naive Unai Emery
To start with starting Torreira and Guendouzi in the midfield hole was a rather poor move, Guendouzi exposed Torreira far too often and allowing the Uruguayan to do most of the interceptions and tackling.
There was a reason why Ozil did not had an impact today, the midfield pairing of Torreira-Guendouzi means there is no one who connects with him the way Xhaka normally does. Also, the lack of creativity was obvious to see.
Moving forward, Unai! Unai! Unai!….. Why take off Ozil, the taking off led to much more pressure on us. We lost control of the game and have been relying on trying to score on the counter from then on. Last two substitutions were wrong.
– Xhaka At Left Back Is Wrong
Whatever Unai Emery is trying to achieve by playing Granit Xhaka at left back for the sake of me is a totally wrong move.
Xhaka was far too exposed on the left but wait, that was a great freekick, Xhakabooom huh?.
The decision to even have Xhaka at leftback makes the team even more poor in the middle, no stability or control of the middle park.
In a way, Xhaka shouldn’t be played at leftback against Liverpool, if so, then that’s a disaster waiting to happen.
– Porous Lacazette
Alexander Lacazette, had a chance to give the Gunners the lead in the first half and fluffed his line, held the ball too much to himself, fail to link up well with Aubameyang and had a chance to put Mesut Ozil through on goal but wishes to ignore his run, yet he finished the entire game.
I honestly feel like he need’s a breather on the bench, play Aubameyang upfront with Iwobi and Mhki on the flanks. Just maybe he can gets his bearing right, a quick reminder that he also had a rather unlucky game vs Leicester City last Monday.
– Finally the winning run ends but the unbeaten run continues
Considering the kind of ground we travelled to, this could have easily been a defeat, forgot so soon the 3-0 bashing last two season?.. Then, this tells you we’re indeed progressing.
Not the result we wanted but on reflection we never deserved more than a point. The run comes to an end for wins but we never lost.
After losing their opening two games, Arsenal are now unbeaten in 12 games in all competitions under Unai Emery.
We’re back at the Emirates on Wednesday vs Blackpool in the Carabao Cup. That should be a game to get back to winning ways.
Until then, do have a great week, Twitter is @MikeThePundit.. Let’s get talking.
