The Premier League is back and all is well with the world again. To say we have missed this suspenseful part of our lives is an understatement.
We have kept ourselves busy with preseason football, and to be honest, Arsenal didn’t do badly! We’ve won a treble even before the season begins. What a start! Lmao.
Now, all that is over and it’s time to get back to the real business. Every match day, if I am not sick, I will be taking a look inside my crystal balls and predict what will happen in the EPL this season.
(Caveat: Do not take my predictions seriously. Also, ignore them at your peril. Gotcha!)
Friday 11th August, 2017
Arsenal 3 vs 0 Leicester City
This is the first time a Premier League Season will begin on a Friday. And it’s no coincidence that one of the teams with the honour of playing on that day is the classiest in England. Not you Leicester.
I see Arsenal recording their first opening day victory in 3 years in this fixture. Alexis is out, Ramsey and Ozil are doubtful and even with the uncertainties in defence, I don’t see Leicester troubling them much. Iheanacho and Vardy would cause a lot of teams harm this season but it’s not starting today.

Watford 1 vs 1 Liverpool
Watford have made a couple of signings this season – the purchase of Nathaniel Chalobah, Tom Cleverley, Andre Gray and Will Hughes will definitely strengthen them. Liverpool’s front three of Mane, Salah and Firmino will also score goals but I don’t see that starting in this game. The timing of Phillipe Coutinho’s transfer request will also haunt them in my opinion.
Liverpool have been known to always struggle against smaller teams. I don’t see that ending tonight. 1 – 1.
Chelsea 1 vs 0 Burnley
The Champions lost the Community Shield last week to Arsenal. Coach Conte wants more players to avoid the ‘Mourinho Season’ but I think that’s what they are going to have this season except they strengthen. Teams would have become familiar with their 3-4-3 formation and would get accustomed to it. Conte changed his formation after an Arsenal defeat last season. Is another one on the horizon? Time will tell.
Burnley have lost two of their key player from last season. Andre Gray and Michael Keane left for Watford and Everton respectively. This will have an effect on their season but I don’t see that lasting long. In Sean Dyche, they’ve got a good manager who can make the best of what he has. They will still be a tough nut to crack but I think they will lose this narrowly. 1 – 0
Crystal Palace 1 vs 1 Huddersfield
It’s going to be a tough season at Crystal Palace. Frank De Boer doesn’t know what he’s gotten himself into. They’ve signed just 2 players while letting go a host of others. They got Ruben Loftus-Cheek from Chelsea on loan and Jairo Riedewald from Ajax. To be honest, I’ve never seen both play and I don’t think they’ll have much effect on the team. They will be down in the bottom end of the table unless something happens between now and August 31.
Huddersfield are new to the Premier League. As this is their first game, they’d want to impress and I think they will. They won’t win but I see them nicking a draw at Selhurst Park.
Everton vs Stoke City
Everton have been one of the busiest teams of this summer. Wayne Rooney, Jordan Pickford and Sandro Ramirez are some of the high profile signings they’ve made.Michael Keane was one of the standout performers of last season. His partnership with Ashley Williams is one to watch out for this season. It’s time for Ronald Koeman to justify the monies the owners have spent this season starting with this game.
In Stoke City, they’ve got a formidable opponent. Kurt Zouma, on loan from Chelsea, will add more steel to a team that doesn’t bend easily.
Even though the loss of Lukaku will hurt The Toffees this season, I still think they’ll be fine. They’ll win this 2 – 1.
Southampton 2 vs 0 Swansea
Southampton’s major headache this season is the future of star defender, Virgil van Dijk. The Dutchman handed the club a transfer request amidst a lengthy statement criticizing the club. They’ve not done exceptionally on the transfer front with just two signings. I see them struggling this season except something changes between now and end of August.
Swansea narrowly escaped relegation last season. I think they will be in a relegation scrap this season too. They’ve not bought well this season and with the future of striker Fernando Llorente yet to be sorted, there is still a long way for them to go before they are a balanced team.
With that, I think they’ll lose this game. 2 – 0.
West Brom 2 vs 1 Bournemouth
West Brom are a midtable side. They won’t challenge at the top of the table, and they won’t get dragged into a relegation battle. That won’t change this season. They will be difficult to beat this season at The Hawthorns.
Bournemouth are one of the standout teams of last season. In Jermain Defoe, they’ve got one of the most prolific scorers in the history of the Premier League. The problem however lies in the creative hub of their midfield. Jack Wilshere has returned to Arsenal and they will have to find a way of getting by in that part.
They will be fine this season, but not tomorrow. They’ll lose 2 – 1.
Brighton 0 vs 3 Manchester City
This is a straight win for Manchester City. They always do well at the start of the season and I believe they will have too much for Brighton.
Brighton will surprise a lot of teams this season because of their tidy style of play, but they are about to find out you need more than that in the Premier League. 0 – 3.
Newcastle 2 vs 0 Tottenham
The last time Newcastle played Tottenham in the Premier League, they won 5 – 1 even though they’ve been relegated. I see them winning this game against all odds. In Rafa Benitez, they’ve got a seasoned manager with a brilliant knowledge of the game.
Tottenham will struggle this season and the reasons are not far-fetched. They’ve changed stadiums and they might not sign any player this summer. Do they have the squad depth to prosecute four competitions? No.
They’ll win some games but the one against Newcastle is not part. 2 – 0.
Manchester United 2 vs 1 West Ham
Manchester United are also one of the ‘Transfer Windows Winners’. They’ve made some really decent signings in Lukaku and Lindelof (holds laugh). Matic will also give them a much needed strength in the centre of the park. It’s time for them to come out and play and stop being a defensive side that they’ve always been under Mourinho.
Many people have tipped them to win the league but I don’t see that happening to be honest. They don’t have that team yet in my opinion. Except what happened in the 2015/16 season happens, they won’t.
They’ll win tomorrow against West Ham but it won’t be a regular thing. They’ll win 2 – 1 with their former employee – Javier Hernandez scoring for the Hammers.
