What a crazy first week of football! The season began with a bang as Arsenal and Leicester served us a 7-goal thriller on FIrday. The next day didn’t disappoint either with Liverpool’s draw at Watford and Chelsea’s home loss to Burnley. Who would have ‘thunk’ that!

That said, the second week of football is upon us. If we get served the same thing we experienced last week, we are in for a gooooood time.

Before my predictions for this round of football, I will like to invite you to participate in our Octopus Challenge. You can make your own predictions now – take me on and other football fans. Let’s enjoy the fun being thrown at us by the Premier League together.

Here is what the standing looks like after Game Week 1

August 19, 2017

Swansea 0 vs 2 Manchester United

This should be a straight win for Manchester United even though I wouldn’t want that. They were quite dominant in their 4 – 0 victory over West Ham and I see the game at the Liberty Stadium being an easy one. Their dominance wasn’t down to the fact that they were vintage, I think West Ham just rolled on the floor and they duly obliged.

Swansea, if not careful might go down this season. They have just sold Gylfi Sigurdson – a key member of the squad. They have to invest the money wisely or else there could be trouble for them.

That said, I still expect them to go ahead and give United a stronger game than the one they had against West Ham. Whatever the case, I think they will lose 2 – 0.

Bournemouth 1 vs 2 Watford

Bournemouth had a lot of possesion in their loss to West Brom but failed to make something of it. The fact that West Brom scored early didn’t help though. I think that will be the case again this time as I think they will lose to Watford. The Cherries snatched a draw from the jaws of defeat last week when they played Liverpool. I think that will spur them on in this game. Both sides will be at the lower end of the ladder and games like this would guarantee their safety and otherwise.

I see Watford coming out top in this one with a 2 – 1 win.

Leicester City 2 vs 0 Brighton

Leicester City perfected their game plan to hit Arsenal on the counter last week and it worked for a while. However Arsenal’s quality eventually told. Against Brighton, they don’t need to worry about that. They need to come out and take the game to them and I believe they will be fine.

Brighton’s negative experience of the Premier League looks set to continue in this game. They frustrated Manchester City in the first half of the first game but City’s quality eventually came out top. That will likely happen again. And even if it doesn’t happen that way, I still don’t see them getting anything from this game.

I’m going for a 2 – 0 win in favour of Leicester.

Southampton 2 vs 1 West Ham

West Ham were so terrible in the game against Manchester United. They literally rolled on the floor for United to spank them. That was by far the most one-sided game last weekend. They will improve against Southampton but that won’t get them the results.

Southampton could have won against Swansea. They couldn’t manage that despite being the better side. I actually don’t see that happening in this game if West Ham were as bad as they were against United.

The Saints to win 2 – 1.

Liverpool 1 vs 1 Crystal Palace

This game would end in a draw. I saw Liverpool’s games against Watford and Hoffenheim and the terrible state of their defence was so glaring. Hoffenheim were the better side in their midweek game and could have won but for their profligacy. Against Watford, it was same old. Like I said last week, Liverpool might get wins against big teams who would come out and match them toe-to-toe but against the smaller ones, they’ll struggle.

That trend will continue today against Crystal Palace who would have a point to prove after their horrendous outing last week. The game will end 1 – 1.

Burnley 0 vs 0 West Brom

This game has 0 – 0 draw written all over it. Both sides recorded victories on Match Day 1 but I don’t see that happening this time. Burnley were so impressive in the first half of their victory at Chelsea. They took the game to the Champions, capitalized on the one-man advantage they had and were 3 goals up at half time.

Against West Brom, a team famed for brutal rearguard action, that won’t happen. West Brom went on the defensive once they scored against Bournemouth last week. That will happen again this week as they are away from home.

A boring 0 – 0 draw awaits us.

Stoke City 0 vs 2 Arsenal

Stoke City have always been Arsenal’s nemesis. They’ve always thrown everything at Arsenal because they knew they wouldn’t like it. Arsenal matched them last season and ran out comfortable winner in the end. That will happen this time again.

Arsenal’s defensive frailties were there for all too see in the opening day win over Leicester. I expect a bit of solidity in defence this time. Mustafi/Per should come in and calm the storm. Granit Xhaka was magnificent towards the end of the game last week, I expect to see him take charge once more this time.

I don’t see anything other than an Arsenal win in this game. 2 – 0 to the Gunners.

Sunday 20th August

Huddersfield 0 vs 1 Newcastle

Huddersfield were the big winners last week. What a way to announce your arrival into the big time! Crystal Palace were dire last week and the new boys took advantage. Against Newcastle, they might not have that luck.

I thought Newcastle were brilliant against Tottenham, and they could have gotten one or two goals of their own. I believe they’d get a win this time against their fellow newly-promoted side.

1 – o to the Magpies

Tottenham 2 vs 1 Chelsea

This is the big game of the weekend. We will get a clue of how Tottenham will adapt to their home for the season – Wembley Stadium. We will also see how Chelsea will line up after the red cards to Cahill and Fabregas last week.

Tottenham have just signed a defender we had to ‘google’ about and in all honesty, I don’t see why they need him, but eh, what do I know? Chelsea on the other hand are still looking to do some businesses.

I see this game going one way. I think Chelsea will lose. That is because I don’t see how they’ll match Spurs without two of their key players.

Inasmuch as it pains me to say, I think Spuds will win 2 – 1.

Monday 21st August

Manchester City vs Everton

City were made to do hard work against Brighton before they saw them off in the last game. They had much of the ball but were unproductive until later in the second half. In this game against Everton, I don’t see that happening. Everton wouldn’t sit back and allow City run them over. This is because they’ve also got a point to prove.

At the end City’s quality will prevail and they’ll win 2 – 1.
