The first major piece of silverware has gone to Arsenal. The Gunners defeated Chelsea on penalties to win the Community Shield after the game ended 1 -1 in 90 minutes.
Arsenal, who played the game without key players like Sanchez, Ozil and Ramsey, began the game brightly but were unable to get the goal they deserved.
Welbeck should have scored in the 8th minute but his header after a cross from Xhaka was lame. Lacazette also had a chance to put his name on the scoresheet after some good work by him and the duo of Welbeck and Bellerin, but his effort was denied by the upright,
Moments after, Per Mertesacker had to be taken off after taking a heavy blow to the head. Chelsea had a corner which wasn’t clear properly. The BFG was late to the ball and Cahill absolutely smashes him with an elbow accidentally.
He was replaced with Serbian defender, Sead Kolasinac.
Chelsea also had a chance of their own when Victor Moses aimed a low shot at Cech which the goalkeeper did well to save. In a typical Chelsea manner, they tried to get a goal through illegal means (bantz please) but referee Madley was having none of that as he booked Willian for a dive.
Chelsea took the lead early in the second half through Victor Moses after a bit if schoolboy defending. Kolasinac, who played a major part in Chelsea’s goal atoned for his error with coolly headed goal from Xhaka’s free kick. That was after Pedro had been sent of a studs on tackle on Elneny.
The game went into penalties after 90 minutes with the FA trialing the new ABBA PK method. Chelsea scored one of theirs while Arsenal scored all 4.
With the Community Shield now done and dusted, the real business of the season begins on Friday against Leicester.
