Arsenal’s stand-captain and defender, Laurent Koscielny’s dismissal against Everton has been upheld by the Football Association.
This means the Frenchman would serve a 3-game suspension, starting with the FA Cup Final against Chelsea this Saturday.
Koscielny was sent off for a serious foul play after a tackle on Enner Valencia. Arsenal had hoped they would be able to overturn the decision as it felt harsh, but their hope has now been dashed.
You can’t just help but wonder if the same card colour would have been produced if the player dishing out the foul was putting on the opponent’s colour.
That’s a story for another day.
Koscielny’s absence has now given Arsenal a defensive crisis ahead of the Cup Final against Chelsea. Gabriel Paulista, who was brought in to replace Kos, also got injured.
According to the manager, Saturday might be too early for him.
“Gabriel’s injury looks quite serious, especially for next Saturday,” said Wenger. “We lost two centre-backs and that is a big blow.”
With doubts over the availability of Shkodran Mustafi, Arsenal might be forced to play Per Mertesacker, who has only featured once this season, alongside Rob Holding and Nacho Monreal in a 3-man defence.
Except a miracle happens with Mustafi before Saturday, that’s what’s going to happen.
God help the Arsenal.
