FA Cup Recap

So the FA Cup match with Southampton went without hitch! Who would have ‘thunk’ that? When one consider the way we’ve always fallen short whenever we play Southampton – both home and way, one can’t just but marvel at the way they were easily dispatched on Saturday.

We made 10 changes to the side that beat Burnley in the Premier League and it was still like we played with a full strength side. Worthy of note is the fact that Southampton also made 9 changes of their own.

How magnificient were The Ox and Maitland-Niles in that central midfield role! The fact that Wenger even had the balls to play him despite having an horrible game in the last round is applaudable. The youngster was tidy in possession, and his tackling was spot on too.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s best ever game in an Arsenal shirt was in a central midfield role (UCL game vs Milan in 2012), with his performance against Southampton, I am of the opinion he is wasting on the flanks. He was influential all through the game completing 91% of his passes, completed three take-ons , won two tackles and two interceptions. This is quite remarkable for a player who some fans see as useless.

Danny Welbeck’s performance in his first start for over a year was also a source of joy. The confidence with which he took his first two goals and his general performance will add a fresh dimension to the team.

With Southampton out of the way, we now look forward to the 5th Round Draw holding later today. A favourable draw is what we hope for, but I believe with the team we have, we can defeat any team we may face.

Attention turns to the Premier League clash against Watford at the Emirates. There were reports Watford turned down our offer to push the game to Wednesday because they played a day after us in the FA Cup. Classy from both sides if you ask me.

I expect all the regulars to come back to the team and I expect us to see the game off without any hitches.

Chelsea’s game against Liverpool is a perfect opportunity to reduce the 8 point gap and I hope Liverpool can do it for the sake of world peace.

Knowing that we play Chelsea on Saturday afternoon, I’ll expect the key players to be taken off once the game has been won (Alexis included).

Sidney Ehigiator (@sidramatic_1) will give us his match preview later in what is expected to be a cracking game.

I’ll see you all (literally) soon.

Until then, Come On You Gunners!
