Arsenal had just one job in the game against Basel if they are to top their group – win their game and hope Ludogorets do them a favour in their clash with PSG and that was what happened.
Arsenl settled into their stride early on and it was no surprise when the scored their first in the 7th minute.
Alexis Sanchez was allowed some space on the edge of the area and he gratefully obliged by lofting the ball into Gibbs at the back stick, who crossed over to Lucas, who couldn’t miss from two yards out.
Basel responded well to going behind with Janko and Delgado both going close but both couldn’t quite get the ball into he back of the net.
For all of the host’s probing, it was Arsenal who got their second of the night through Lucas Perez. As a matter of fact, this goal is a replica of the first. Kieran Gibbs’s shot was fumbled into the path of Lucas who was presented with the simple chance of tapping in.
Just like when they conceded the first, Basel came out strong after the restart but qere either denied by Ospina or by wayward finishing.
Arsenal got their third of the night two minutes into the secondhalf and it was Lucas again at the end of a brilliant long ball from Gibbs. The Left-Back fired a pass down the middle, which Lucas latched onto and scuffed a low shot past Vaclik.
Arsenal sealed the victory 7 minutes after Alexis and Ozil combined to set up Alex Iwobi who scored his first Champions League goal via an easy tap-in.
The hosts never quite got going and could have sunk further down the mire when Alexis hit the cross bar from a free kick. They however got a consolation through Seydou Doumbia.
The Ivorian bullied his way through a sea of Arsenal defenders and slotted past Ospina in style after Holding had given the ball away.
Arsenal held on to preserve their three goal lead and with result in the other game favouring, finished top of their group for the first time since 2011.
