Arsene Wenger has poured cold water on suggestions that Arsenal could be set to swoop for Feyenoord right-back Rick Karsdorp in the January transfer window.

Manchester United were linked with a bid to sign the defender earlier this month as Jose Mourinho considers bolstering his defensive options next month.

Wenger was asked directly whether Arsenal were keen on signing Karsdorp next month, and the Gunners boss issued a typically dismissive response.

Wenger told Ziggo Sport, as quoted by Metro: “No, we are currently not looking for a defender, so your information is not quite right.

“Do I know him? Yeah, he’s definitely a good player, but we are now focused on winning the next game.”

Wenger is currently gearing his Arsenal side up for their Premier League clash against Crystal Palace at The Emirates on Sunday afternoon.

The north London side head into the game in fourth place in the table following their 1-0 win over West Brom at The Emirates on Boxing Day.

The Gunners have some work to do if they want to haul themselves back into the title race, as they currently trail leaders Chelsea by nine points.
