Arsenal continued their recent good form with an impressive 2 – 0 victory over Swiss Champions, FC Basel. This was The Gunners first 3 points in the Champions League this season after they could only pick up one in the first game against PSG.
Arsenal were devastating against Chelsea and fans who asked for more of the same were not disappointed as it took the Gunners just six minutes to make their mark in this game.
A fine move opens up the Basel defence as Alexis Sanchez latched onto a ball played from the midfield, he in turn sent a cross into the area which man-of-the moment Theo Walcott did well to nod in despite arriving late.
It was just what Arsenal needed and the Emirates was in full voice.
Arsenal kept on threatening with Basel doing little to counter that. The Gunners seemed able to slice open their defence at will and could have gotten their second in the 20th minute. Alexis Sanchez showed great strength to hold off the playing marking him but his ball to Ozil was a bit too late and the assistant flagged for offside.
Arsenal were not to be denied for long as they got their second minutes later through that man again – Theo Walcott. The Englishman played exchanged quick passes with one of his partner-in-crime, Alexis Sanchez before sending his shot to the far corner via the bottom of the post. That was his fourth goal in three games. Phenomenal!
Arsenal should have been out of sight but for some profligacy in front of goal. Walcott picked out Santi Cazorla on the edge of the area in the 35th minute. The little magician sent a delightful pass to Alexis Sanchez whose dink was well read by the goalkeeper who saved well for a corner kick.
Arsenal tried to get the third goal but were either fluffed by the Basel goalkeeper or by their own woeful finishing. The goalkeeper saved well from Bellerin and Sanchez to keep the score respectable. This was Arsenal’s 4th victory in all competitions and have been unbeaten since the opening day loss to Liverpool.
Ozil, Sanchez and Walcott were all in the mood and were unplayable. The centre backs were nit really troubled and David Ospina really shouldn’t have been on the pitch. That was how good Arsenal were. It was a really assured display and if Arsenal can keep fit or at least reduce injuries to a respectable number, nothing is imoossible.
We go again at the weekend in the EPL where we travel to Burnley.
Come On You Gunners!
