Arsenal are through to the next round of the EFL Cup after a stress-less 4 – 0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.
This game gave the Arsenal boss the chance to feature some of his fringe players and they didn’t disappoint. As a matter of fact, of the players that played any part in the game at the KC Stadium on Saturday, only Granit Xhaka and Mohammed Elneny made the team. Martinez replaced Petr Cech in goal in a somewhat surprising move as everyone had expected David Ospina to feature. Rob Holding, who is celebrating his 21st birthday partners returnee – Gabriel Paulista in defence while Aisley Mailand-Niles and Kieran Gibbs complete the defence line. Granit Xhaka and Mohammed Elneny provide cover for the defence while Jeff Rene-Adelaide and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain provide support for forward men Lucas Perez and Chuba Akpom.
Arsenal began the game on the front foot but were lucky not to go behind after former Fulham player, Patjim Kasami sent a shot wide after being played in by ex-Gunner, Nicklas Bendtner.
Arsenal got their first through Granit Xhaka and it had a similar feel to his goal at Hull. His shot from 35-yards out took a deflection before being palmed into the roof of the net by goalkeeper, Stoijkovic.
Forest started the second half looking to cause his former side a little problem but it was Arsenal who got their second. Mancienne was penalized for a foul in the box and the referee duly awarded a penalty – Arsenal’s 5th this season. Lucas stepped up and converted.
At this point, it was a question of how many more will Arsenal score.
Lucas got his second of the night after some really impressive work. Mancienne had looked like winning the ball before Lucas did just well to rob him off the ball and rounded the keeper before forcing the ball over the line.
Alex Oxlade Chamberlain got Arsenal’s fourth of the night and we can only hope this boost his confidence which looks shattered at moment.
That’s done now. We look forward to Chelsea at the weekend.
Come on You Gunners.
