Deportivo La Coruna striker, Lucas Perez Martinez has joined Arsenal on a long term contract reported to be worth around £17 million.
The 27-year old Spaniard, who was on loan at Greek side, PAOK Salonica before signing permanently for Deportivo scored 17 goals last season, and was initially close to sealing a move to Premier League rivals, Everton, before the Gunners hijacked the deal. It was reported that the lure of Champions League football convinced the striker to join Arsenal.
Having being snubbed by Leicester City striker, Jamie Vardy who opted to stay with the champions and then being outpriced by Olympic Lyon for Alexandre Lacazette, the Gunners can’t afford to go into the season with Olivier Giroud as the main striker.
At a point, that was looking likely to be the case as there were reports Deportivo had rejected our offer for the striker, but then, a new offer was made which was accepted. Deportivo released a statement saying they’ve excluded Lucas from the team to face Betis tomorrow.
Perez, who is a late bloomer just like Jamie Vardy, will give Arsenal another attacking dimension and with arguably the best midfield in the league behind him, he should be able to deliver goals for Arsenal.
Speaking to the Arsenal Official Website, Arsène Wenger said of Lucas: “He’s not only a goalscorer, he’s a guy who combines well with partners, who can give a final ball and makes good runs. He’s got a good eye for goal and had an outstanding season last year.
We wish him well.
