The first game of the Arsenal preseason schedule kicked off this evening with a draw against French Lique 2 side, RC Lens. The match which was played in Northern France ended a draw after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain cancelled out Michael Autret’s goal.
Eweobaja Olumuyiwa (@Folumuyiwa_1) was our eye for the game and here are the five things he learnt:
Chuba Akpom as a back up striker is a No-No
Chuba Akpom’s performance in the first half showed why the lad is still a long way from the first team. There have been reports he might start against Liverpool in the EPL opener but if today’s showing is anything to go by, playing without a recognized centre forward is a better option.
Calum Chamber’s versatility is commendable but he needs to work on his headers:
Youmg defender Chambers started as a centre back before being moved to right back at the start of the second half. This versatility will ensure he gets a place in the Arsenal team but he needs to work on his headers. He was at fault for the first goal and almost made te same mistake in the second half. Way to go for him.
Theo Walcott – Sighs
Everytime the ball touches Walcott, I see a player lacking confidence. This is not the Theo that was proclaimed to be the new Henry. His decision making was zero all game; he didn’t do much when moved upfront and when on the wing. He is 27 and if he’s still developing at this stage, when will he come to maturity.
Oxlade-Chamberlain out to prove a point
Oxlade-Chamberlain had a torrid time last season with injuries but he seemed to have workes himself up in preparaion for the new season. He was sharp and that goal was a wonderful reminder of what we thought we were signing when he joined from Southampton. If the Ox can stay fit, he’d be a masive player for us next season.
Pipe down, Arsenal fans! It was just a preseason friendly
While the game was on, I scanned through Twitter to see some fans getting annoyed at the way the game was being played. Come on guys, that was just the first game after some time out. If we’re this vexed at a friendly, what will happen when the season kicks off?
