ALBANIA looked to have secured a good point against France until Antoine Greizman’s excellent late header broke their heart. Here are the 5 things I learnt from the game:
1) DESCHAMP’S SELECTION:
Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezman, 2 of the highly rated stars in the French National Team were left on the bench. Well maybe Antoine needed a rest because of his prolonged club activities over the season and look jaded but Pogba’s absence was curious.
2) PAYET STILL THE MAIN MAN:
As far as this competition is concerned, Payet is still the main man for the French. He showed that in the first game and again against Albania. He was the best player before the break, but when the team did not tick, he was shifted out-wide due to the introduction of Pogba in the second half. He never stopped tormenting Albania’s defence with dribbles and crosses from the wide area. He is without doubt the best player on the pitch and capped the game with a brilliant curling goal in the stoppage time.
3) HEARTBREAK FOR ALBANIA:
After troubling Swiss in the first game, they held France at bay with relative ease for long period. The defensive line was solid and worked some quick counter attacking play. In the final minutes of the game however, they had their hearts broken by that Griezmann’s excellent header and Payet’s curling strike.
4) NOT GIROUD’S NIGHT :
It was an unlucky night for Oli. He was man marked all through onward and upwards. Though he was handed three good opportunities, most of them in the second half, he failed to get a single shot on target. He was substituted just when he was getting closer and was eventually booed off by his own fans. Crazy French.
5) KANTE INCREASING HIS WORTH WITH EVERY GAME:
N’golo Kante once again put in a fantastic performance using his significant work rate in breaking up Albania’s attack with perfectly timed tackles. Whenever France needed him against Albania’s attack, he was there, slowing down or pushing it wide. He still made some late attacking runs and had some shots deflected away from goal. That should be a very good news for Leicester City.
